Black Friday price matching: Yeah, mostly dead but I discussed effective ones

Black Friday price matching

I was closing my laptop to sleep. Suddenly, I heard a soft digital chime from my phone. At first, I ignored it, then I felt a little insomnia. So, I checked it. It was a LinkedIn inbox message notification; someone sent me something in text format.

I summarize that message here = Last November, one shopper bought a MacBook from Best Buy on Black Friday. The price was about $1,200. Two days later, he saw the same laptop on Best Buy’s own website for $1,050.

He called customer service. A representative promised a price match refund within 7–10 business days. He waited, didn’t get a response, and called again. Then, the representative made another promise & he waited but didn’t get a response.

47 days later, Best Buy emailed him: Your purchase is now past the return period. We cannot process the price match.

Such a sorrowful story! What mistake cost this shopper $150? After analyzing this case, I found that this shopper didn’t clearly understand the price match policy.

The fact is: This is the experience of many shoppers. I checked Reddit deal communities, Slickdeals forums, DealNews & DontPayFull comment sections. Yeah, got many similar stories.

I know you visit retailer policy pages, but I think you don’t understand them clearly; i.e., you can’t apply them in real Black Friday shopping. So I wrote this article to save you time by explaining related shopping terms and breaking down complex regulatory finance language.

I hope my personal experiment-based article helps you understand price matching for Black Friday. Let’s start:

Is it worth financially trying to price match on Black Friday?

Based on my analysis, yes, but only for price adjustments on the retailer’s own price drops. This is because competitor matching is largely suspended.

Say you bought from Target and Target drops the price. In this case, you have 14 days to request the difference. But if you bought from Best Buy and Amazon has a lower price, then you are out of luck during Black Friday week.

I differentiated price matching & price adjustment?

I noticed shoppers repeatedly ask about the difference between price matching & price adjustment in deal forums (i.e., Reddit, Slickdeals, DontPayFull, etc.). Yeah, they are prominent deal sites, so asking questions here is worthwhile.  You can even use AI shopping tools for a better answer.

From a financial perspective, I found a gap in that answer. By saying this, I don’t want to prove that I am more intelligent than them. My explanation will save you time & give a professional outlook while also saving money.

Let’s read the table:

Feature Price matching Price adjustment
What it is Matching a competitor’s price If the store lowers the price after you buy something, they give you back the difference.
When it works Year-round (except Black Friday) Within 14–30 days of purchase
Works during Black Friday? No; most retailers suspend it Yes; if the retailer drops its own price
Who offers it Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Home Depot Target, Costco, Best Buy (members)
Proof required Competitor’s ad or website Your receipt & current lower price
Noticeable features Black Friday deals are excluded Must request before return deadline closes

The moral is: During Black Friday week, competitor price matching is largely dead. But price adjustment works, i.e., you can get money back when the retailer itself drops the price within its return period.

I compare retailers to find out who matches & who suspends?

If I were the shopper, I would definitely ask about who matches & who suspends during Black Friday after reading the 1st question. In my opinion, this is a precondition for hassle-free shopping.

I know you can get quick information from AI search, but I organize it as per shopping purposes. Don’t worry, I have collected all information from official retailer sites. Let’s understand the table:

Retailer Competitor price match? Black Friday exclusion? Price adjustment (Own price)? Deadline
Walmart No = only Walmart.com for in-store purchases  Yes = Excluded Not advertised N/A
Target No =Target.com and Target Circle only Excluded Yes 14 days
Best Buy Yes =Amazon, Walmart, Target, Costco Excluded Yes (members) 15 days (60 for Plus/Total)
Amazon No price matching at all N/A No N/A
Costco No competitor matching N/A Yes 30 days
Kohl’s In-store with physical ad Excluded (Thanksgiving week) No 14 days
Home Depot Limited competitors Excluded Not advertised N/A

My opinion?

My first advice for you = Don’t count on competitor price matching during Black Friday shopping. Rely on the retailer’s own price-adjustment policy, and know the deadline before you buy.

My analysis found that Walmart’s policy is restrictive. Walmart only matches Walmart.com prices for in-store purchases. It does not match competitors at all (online or in-store) and explicitly excludes Black Friday, Cyber Monday, clearance, and Rollback items.

Target officially ended competitor price matching, hmm, including Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy on July 28, 2025. Its guarantee now covers only Target’s own prices, hmm, in stores, on Target.com, and through Target Circle deals for 14 days after purchase.

Best Buy’s price match guarantee excludes Black Friday pricing, special daily or hourly sales, and items for sale the Thursday before Thanksgiving through the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Amazon has no price matching program. It discontinued its general price match policy in 2016 and has no formal program in any category today.

When to request a refund during the price match period?

I think knowing how to get a refund for a Black Friday purchase is one reason you are reading my article. By considering this reason, I created this table. I hope you will find it helpful.

Retailer Deadline opens Deadline closes How to request?
Target At purchase 14 days after purchase Guest services or online chat
Best Buy At purchase 15 days (standard); 60 days (members) In-store, app, or phone
Costco At purchase 30 days after purchase Customer Service or Order Status page
Kohl’s At purchase 14 days after purchase In-store with receipt
Walmart In-store only N/A Store manager discretion

If I relate this table to the shopper I introduced at the beginning of this article, his mistake was waiting too long.

According to me, by the time Best Buy processed his request, his return period had closed. If he requested a price adjustment immediately, without waiting a few days, he would get a refund.

My tips = When you see a lower price at the same retailer, request the adjustment quickly. Don’t wait for the sale to end. Don’t assume the retailer will honor it later. Remember that the retailer’s policy is simple: the deadline is the deadline.

Take a screenshot to document prices as proof?

Look, an oral promise doesn’t work for a refund. I wish I didn’t have to say this: the customer representative isn’t your friend & doesn’t care whether you get a refund.

So, be a forensic auditor & keep a record of your purchase. I have segregated this into 2 parts: before & after documents.

Capture these before you buy:

Item Importance?
The product page showing the full price Proof of what you paid
The model number Ensures you are comparing identical items
The date and time Timestamps your evidence
The retailer’s URL Proves it is a qualified competitor or the same retailer
Your order confirmation Links you to the purchase

Capture these after buy or when you see a lower price:

Item Importance
The current product page showing the lower price Proof of the price drop
The date and time Shows it happened within the deadline
The URL Proves it is the same retailer

My tip: Take screenshots on your phone. Most retailers accept mobile screenshots at Guest Services. I found that Target’s policy states this = Please show the online price or digital version of the ad on your mobile device for proof of price; a Target team member will verify.

Mark my words: Don’t rely on memory. Don’t assume the representative will look it up. Don’t wait until the sale is over. Just screenshot it when you see it.

I measure credit card price protection?

I found that most major credit cards have eliminated price protection. But I have found a few that offer it, and it can be worth hundreds of dollars. Let’s read about them:

Card / Network Price Protection? Coverage period Max per claim
Chase No = discontinued in 2018 N/A N/A
Bank of America  No N/A N/A
Capital One Some cards as per my study (via Mastercard) 120 days $10,000 per claim
Mastercard (select cards) Yes 60–120 days $250 per claim
Discover  No N/A N/A

My recent analysis found this = Capital One World Elite Mastercard offers price protection covering purchases made on or after April 1, 2026 (as of now), with a coverage period of 120 days following the purchase date.

Mastercard’s price protection reimburses the difference between what you paid and the new sale price, up to $250 per claim, within 60 to 120 days of purchase.

My suggestions: Check your card’s benefits guide before Black Friday. If your card offers price protection, use it for large purchases. In my opinion, it is a second safety net if the retailer refuses your adjustment.

Quick Q/A: Reader’s Most Asked?

Does Kohl’s price match on Black Friday?

Hmm, Kohl’s will match competitor prices in-store with a physical ad, but not during Thanksgiving week or the week after. Yeah, Black Friday promotions are excluded, as I said in the body of the article.

Does Home Depot price match on Black Friday?

No. Home Depot’s price match guarantee excludes special promotional periods, including Black Friday.

Finance Ideas TLDR | Tapos Kumar

  • I found that most major retailers suspend competitor price matching during Black Friday week. Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Home Depot all exclude Black Friday deals.
  • But price adjustments for retailer price drops within their return period work.
  • Request adjustments within 14–30 days of purchase before the return deadline expires.
  • Capture the product page showing the price, model number, and date before you buy.
  • Not all banks offer credit card price protection; for example, Chase and Bank of America don’t offer it now. Yeah, Capital One and some Mastercard cards offer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Black Friday price matching?

What if the retailer refuses my price adjustment?

Hmm, contact your credit card company if your card offers price protection. As I said, Capital One and some Mastercard cards offer this benefit. You can also file a complaint with the FTC at the Report Fraud page.

How long does a price adjustment take?

It varies. Target processes adjustments immediately at Guest Services. Best Buy, let me think, can take 7–10 business days for online requests. But Costco processes adjustments via Customer Service or the Order Status page. I hope my answer helps you.

How do I find the best price match opportunity?

I will be neutral here. I suggest you check the retailer’s own website for price drops within the adjustment deadline. I recommend using price-tracking tools like CamelCamelCamel for Amazon or Honey for other retailers.

Tapos’s last thought

I hope I prove false the common myth about price matching during Black Friday. The fact is: Competitor matching is largely suspended, but price adjustments work. Before I close my article, I want to share a step-by-step guideline on refunds.

I assume you want a $50 refund on a TV.  Read the table to understand how the price-matching system works for Black Friday:

Step Do this What happens?
1 Buy a TV from Target on Black Friday for $800 Receipt shows purchase date
2 Screenshot the product page showing $800 Proof of purchase price
3 Three days later, Target drops the price to $750 You see the new price
4 Screenshot the new price with date and URL Proof of price drop
5 Request price adjustment at Guest Services Representative verifies
6 Receive $50 refund Within Target’s 14-day period

I found that most American shoppers assume Black Friday deals are final. This is a common misconception. I recommend that you act like a pro shopper. How? You can do it by requesting the adjustment before the deadline closes. The process takes only 5 minutes & you will get your refund or $50.
